Martha's House Transitional Housing Program
WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO????
Martha’s House Family Transitional Housing Shelter
Martha’s House Family Transitional Housing Shelter, an outreach of Eastern Oregon Mission, opened in March 2013 to address the critical shortage of transitional housing for families in Eastern Oregon. The program provides safe, temporary housing and supportive services for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. Martha’s House was developed through strong partnerships. Key entities that have provided funding or resources include:
- Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC) & CoBank: Provided funding for building improvements through the Sharing Success program.
- Pac/West Lobby Group
- Amazon Web Services (AWS): In late 2024, AWS awarded Martha's House a solar installation as part of its community investment initiative in Eastern Oregon
- Northeast Oregon Homebuilders Association: Members of this association volunteered much of the skilled labor and construction work at low or no cost.
- Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS): Provides state-level support and technical assistance for the coordinated homeless response system that includes Martha's House.
- Local Volunteers: Significant portions of the development relied on local efforts, including an Eagle Scout project for landscaping and quilts donated by local church groups. The shelter operates as an alcohol- and substance-free program designed to provide stability, structure, and support while families work toward rebuilding their lives.

Housing instability remains a significant challenge across the region. Recent community data suggest that approximately 3,800 residents—about 4% of the population—experience housing instability, while annual counts identify between 300 and 500 individuals living in literal homelessness. Local service providers consistently report that the need for shelter and housing support far exceeds available resources.
These challenges are intensified by rural isolation, limited public transportation, and a shortage of affordable housing. As a result, many Eastern Oregon families struggle to meet basic needs and maintain stable housing.

Martha’s House plays a vital role in addressing these needs by offering a safe, supportive environment where families can stabilize, regain independence, and transition toward permanent housing and self-sufficiency.
